Leaders After Hours is The Leader’s premier community outreach program, connecting with students in grades 6-12 in the Corning-Painted Post School District, the Horseheads School District, and the surrounding area. This year, we’ve had the opportunity to work with a number of students in a variety of different capacities, including a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Southern Tier, visits to the schools for recruitment activities, creative writing classes, and workshops. Leaders After Hours has also sponsored an area writing and art contest for all students in grades 6-12 who were interested in submitting their works for publication.
In working with these students, I have had the benefit and opportunity to see what our future writers, business people, politicians, scientists, doctors, inventors, shop owners, parents, and community members are truly like. I could not be more confident that the future of our area is bright with these young people at the helm. No matter what task or assignment they were given, they approached it with a vigor and passion that is admirable and noteworthy. These students set a great example for all of us to aspire too.
As this program comes to the end of its first year, I am proud to be a part of a company that so willingly supports the promising community members of tomorrow. Our upcoming edition of Hawk Talk, publishing May 8, highlights some of the best work these students have completed and contributed over the course of the past year, and also showcases the talents of many of our students throughout the area.
I hope you enjoy this publication as much as I have enjoyed supporting the students in creating it. It is truly an achievement of our area’s youth and I look forward to seeing what great works they accomplish in their futures.
